Beneath the Surface

This isn't your typical cramped certification course. We keep class sizes small – just you working with our experienced instructors in a relaxed, personalized setting. The two-day program starts with a quick pool refresher at 8:30 AM where you'll shake off any rust and get comfortable with our gear setup. Don't worry if it's been a while since your last pool session – muscle memory kicks in faster than you'd think. After a short lunch break, you'll head out on the afternoon boat at 12:30 PM for your first two certification dives on the reef. The boat returns around 4:30, giving you plenty of time to decompress and talk through what you saw down there. Day two wraps up with your final two cert dives during our morning trip from 7:45 AM to 11:30 AM. Once you surface from that fourth dive, you'll be a certified Open Water diver ready to explore reefs worldwide.

Dive Brief & Gear Info

We provide all the gear you'll need – BCD, regulator, wetsuit, mask, fins, and tanks. Our rental equipment is well-maintained and regularly serviced, so you can focus on your skills rather than worrying about unfamiliar gear. The referral dives follow PADI standards but take advantage of the Keys' calm, clear waters and shallow reef systems. Most certification sites sit in 25-35 feet of water with excellent visibility – usually 40-60 feet on good days. You'll practice essential skills like mask clearing, regulator recovery, and buoyancy control while actually exploring live coral formations and swimming alongside tropical fish. It beats doing these exercises in a quarry back home. Before each dive, we'll brief you on the site layout, expected conditions, and what marine life you're likely to encounter. The afternoon boat visits two different reef sites, giving you variety in your certification experience. Our divemasters know these reefs like their backyard and can point out interesting creatures and formations you might miss on your own.

Marine Life You'll See

The reefs around Key Largo and Islamorada host an amazing variety of tropical species that'll make your certification dives feel more like vacation diving. Parrotfish are everywhere – these colorful grazers spend their days crunching on coral and algae, creating that distinctive underwater sound of teeth scraping rock. They're curious about divers and often swim close enough for great photos. You'll see blue tangs schooling around coral heads, their electric blue bodies flashing in the sunlight filtering down through the water. Sergeant majors are the small, striped fish that seem to own certain sections of reef – they're territorial and will actually chase away much larger fish, including divers who get too close to their nesting sites. Yellowtail snappers cruise the mid-water column in loose schools, their bright yellow tails making them easy to spot against the blue. Keep an eye out for green moray eels tucked into crevices and under ledges. They look intimidating but are generally peaceful unless bothered. Their mouths constantly open and close as they pump water over their gills – totally normal behavior, not aggression. During winter months, you might spot Caribbean reef sharks patrolling the deeper edges of the reef. They're typically shy around divers and more interested in hunting small fish than paying attention to certification students. Nurse sharks sometimes rest under coral overhangs during the day – these bottom-dwellers are harmless and often let divers observe them up close.
